One holiday morning I wanted something special that didn’t require flipping individual slices on the stove and I remembered seeing a recipe for a baked version of French toast so I gave it a try and layered everything the night before. The next morning all I had to do was pop it in the oven and while it baked the house smelled like warm cinnamon and vanilla and breakfast was a cozy success without any hassle.
Now French toast bake is one of my favorite make-ahead breakfasts and it’s soft in the middle crisp on top and full of comforting flavor and it’s perfect for weekend mornings holiday brunches or any time you want something indulgent without standing over the stove.
Ingredients
- Here’s what I use for this recipe. You can always make substitutions if you prefer!
- Thick-cut bread – The base of the dish that soaks up all the custard while staying sturdy
- Eggs – Help bind and create that custardy texture
- Milk – Adds moisture and blends with the eggs to soak the bread
- Heavy cream – Adds richness and a silky texture
- Sugar – Sweetens the custard and adds a bit of crunch on top
- Cinnamon – Adds cozy warmth and classic French toast flavor
- Vanilla extract – Boosts the overall aroma and taste
- Butter – Helps crisp the top and edges while adding richness
- Powdered sugar and berries – Optional toppings for a pretty and fresh finish
Tools You’ll Need
- Baking dish – For layering and baking the French toast
- Whisk – To mix the custard smoothly
- Mixing bowl – To combine the wet ingredients
- Knife – For slicing the bread
- Measuring cups and spoons – To get everything just right
- Oven – To bake everything into warm golden goodness

Instructions
Step 1:
I start by greasing a 9×13-inch baking dish and cutting my bread into thick slices or cubes then I layer them evenly in the dish
Step 2:
In a large bowl I whisk together the eggs milk cream sugar cinnamon and vanilla until everything is fully blended
Step 3:
I pour the mixture slowly over the bread making sure to coat every piece and gently press down to help it absorb
Step 4:
At this point I can cover and refrigerate overnight or let it sit for at least 30 minutes to soak up the custard
Step 5:
When ready to bake I preheat the oven to 350°F and dot the top with a few pieces of butter
Step 6:
I bake for 40 to 45 minutes until the top is golden and the center is set and not too jiggly
Step 7:
Once out of the oven I let it rest for 5 to 10 minutes before dusting with powdered sugar and topping with berries or syrup
