Ingredients

  • 6 large eggs
  • 1 1/2 cups whole milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1 loaf brioche or challah bread (cubed)
  • 2 cups mixed berries (blueberries raspberries strawberries)
  • 1 tbsp butter (for greasing)
  • Powdered sugar (for topping)

Instructions

  1. Cut the bread into cubes and toast or leave out to dry slightly.
  2. In a bowl whisk eggs milk cream sugar vanilla and cinnamon.
  3. Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter.
  4. Layer half of the bread then scatter half of the berries and pour half the custard over.
  5. Repeat with the rest of the bread berries and custard.
  6. Cover and refrigerate for at least 1 hour or overnight.
  7. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  8. Bake covered for 30 minutes then uncover and bake 20 minutes more until golden and set.
  9. Let cool for a few minutes then dust with powdered sugar and serve.

  • Use day-old bread for best texture.
  • Frozen berries can be used just toss in flour first.
  • Lemon zest adds brightness to the custard.
  • Make ahead and refrigerate overnight for best flavor.
